Carnival Cruise Line Fined $10 Million for Dumping Waste

Subtitle: Company to Pay for Illegal Discharge of Bilge Water

Paragraph 1:

Carnival Cruise Line has been fined $10 million for illegally dumping waste into the ocean, the U.S. Department of Justice announced today. The fine is the largest ever imposed for such a violation.

Paragraph 2:

The charges stem from an incident in February 2013, when the Carnival Triumph broke down after launching from Galveston, Texas. The ship was carrying 4,200 passengers and crew members when it lost power and began drifting. Carnival employees then illegally discharged oily bilge water into the Gulf of Mexico.

Paragraph 3:

"This was a serious violation of the law," said Attorney General Eric Holder. "Carnival's actions endangered the environment and the health of our citizens."

Paragraph 4:

Carnival has agreed to pay the fine and to implement a number of measures to prevent future violations. These measures include installing new equipment to prevent the discharge of bilge water, training employees on environmental regulations, and conducting regular inspections of its ships.
